Health and Welfare Benefits

The university offers excellent health insurance, as well as life and short- and long-term disability insurance. For further information, click here.

You must enroll within the first 31 days of your appointment. For both medical and dental plans, you may choose between a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) model, while the vision plan is only offered through a PPO.  Please contact your departmental administrator to find out how to enroll and what your contributions (if any) are to either of these two models. Both have their own pros and cons, so please be sure to visit the Garnett-Powers web page to read about both models and make an informed decision. You may also choose to ask fellow postdocs.  Once a year (usually in November) you will have a chance to switch from one model to the other, if you wish to do so.  Your new choice will come into effect January of the following year.

You have the option to enroll in voluntary long-term disability insurance, which protects you in case you need to be absent from work for an extended period of time due to a medical condition. Also, you will be automatically enrolled (by your department) in short-term disability, life insurance, and accidental death and dismemberment, as well as medical evacuation and repatriation insurance.
