Sigma XI Postdoc Survey

"Doctors Without Orders - Highlights of the Sigma XI Postdoc Survey" was published as a special supplement to American Scientist May - June 2005. Many postdocs on the UC Berkeley campus participated in this survey, which summarizes information from some 7,600 postdoctoral investigators across 46 universities and institutions nationwide.

Some statistics from the survey:

• 42% of all postdocs are women,

• 35% of international postdocs are women

• 54% of postdocs hold temporary visas

• 58% of postdocs are aged 30-35

• 69% are married or otherwise partnered

• 34% have children

• 70% of postdocs are satisfied overall with their postdoc experience

• The median salary for postdocs is $38,000
